In a country where Viagra has been widely used for decades, it's not just a medication. For years, it's been prescribed to help men who struggle with erectile dysfunction (ED) get an erection. But that's not the only concern of this year's National Surgical Association (NSA) meeting in South Africa.
The NSA has heard from several experts in the field who believe the drugs are "all-natural" and should be taken only by men who experience some form of ED.
The first question is whether the drugs have any effect on a man who is impotent.
"It's hard to say what will happen to a man who is sexually aroused and doesn't get an erection when they take them," said Dr. Ramesh Singh, a professor of urology at the University of South Africa's College of Medicine.
The results of the NSA's survey were published today.
"It is a relatively short list of medications to be taken by men who have ED," he added.
The drugs are not recommended for anyone with severe ED, even if the man is able to achieve an erection.
"We have no evidence that the drugs are effective in preventing or reducing the severity of ED," said Dr. Singh.
The NSA has recommended taking Viagra with some special dietary recommendations and some herbal remedies for erectile dysfunction.
"Many people who take Viagra for ED are not going to have an erection," said Dr. "If you're a man who is going to have an erection, it's very important that you take them."
